Early life and backgroundJitendra Patwari, commonly known as Jitu Patwari, was born on 19 November 1973 in Bijalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He comes from a family rooted in the Rau area of Indore; his father, Ramesh Chandra Kodarlal Patwari, was active in local Congress politics and his grandfather, Kodarlal Patwari, took part in the Indian independence movement. Patwari completed his schooling at Government Multi Malhar Ashram Higher Secondary School in Indore and later studied at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and an LLB.
Career
Patwari entered electoral politics in 2013 as a candidate of the Indian National Congress. That year he was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Rau constituency. He retained the Rau seat in the 2018 state election, defeating the BJP candidate by a reported margin of 5,703 votes, and served as the constituency’s legislator through 2023.
Following the 2018 election, Patwari took on responsibilities within the state Congress organization and the state government. He was named working president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress and in December 2018 joined the Kamal Nath government as Cabinet Minister for Higher Education, Youth and Sports Affairs. He resigned from the cabinet in March 2020 amid the broader political turmoil in Madhya Pradesh and was subsequently appointed chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee Media Cell on 1 April 2020.
In the December 2023 state elections, Patwari lost his legislative seat. Shortly after the results, on 16 December 2023 he was appointed president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, a party role that positions him at the center of the state unit’s organizational work.

Patwari is identified with activism as well as electoral politics. He was active in protests following the 2017 Mandsaur events and advocated reopening related investigations after taking office in 2018. He has been publicly visible alongside national Congress leaders and was a vocal supporter of the Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2019.
