Early life and background

Jo Paul Ancheri was born on 2 August 1976 in Thrissur, Kerala. He grew up in the same region where he began playing football as a child and attended Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur. From an early age he took part in local matches and training camps that helped shape his path into the professional game.

Career

Ancheri turned professional in 1992 when he signed with State Bank of Travancore (SBT). His performances in that first season drew attention from several clubs and led to a move to Mohun Bagan for the 1993–94 campaign. He made an immediate impression at Mohun Bagan, scoring in his debut and contributing to a season that included titles such as the Calcutta Football League, Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup, Durand Cup and Federation Cup.

His form at Mohun Bagan earned him a national team call-up in 1994. Ancheri debuted for India on 14 September 1994 against Bangladesh, where he also scored his first international goal. Over the next decade he became a fixture for India, representing the country in World Cup qualifying campaigns, SAFF Championships, the South Asian Games and the Asian Games. He was part of the Indian teams that won the SAFF Cup in 1997 and 1999, and he played until 2004 when an ankle injury brought his international career to an end.

At club level Ancheri had several notable spells. After his initial season with Mohun Bagan he joined JCT (Punjab) in 1994 and remained until 1997, helping the club secure trophies including the Scissors Cup (1995), the Federation Cup (1996) and the inaugural National Football League title in 1996–97, as well as the IFA Shield in 1996.

In 1997 he returned to Kerala to sign for the newly formed FC Kochin, captaining the side to a Durand Cup victory over Mohun Bagan in 1997–98 and featuring in domestic cup finals. He rejoined Mohun Bagan for the 1998–99 season, then went back to FC Kochin for the 1999–2001 period. In 2001 he joined East Bengal for a single season before making a second return to JCT in 2002, staying there through the 2003–04 season.

On the international stage he produced several important moments: goals in 2001 World Cup qualifying fixtures helped India secure points, and he was part of the Indian squad at the 1998 Asian Games and the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, the latter of which finished as runners-up. Domestically and internationally, his versatility saw him deployed across midfield, defence and attack, and he captained the national side during his career.

Retirement and post-playing work

Ancheri retired from club football after the 2004–05 season following a final stint with Mohun Bagan. After injury curtailed his international career, he worked briefly in a government role in Kerala before returning to the sport in other capacities.

He transitioned into broadcasting and analysis, becoming a Malayalam-language commentator and pundit, notably with Star Sports Malayalam. His expertise was recognised when he joined the Regional Experts Panel for ViaCom18 during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He has also been involved with coaching and academy projects, including association with the Novus Soccer Academy observation panel and a role at the Mohun Bagan Sail Football Academy earlier in his post-playing career.
