Early life and background

John McCallum Marshall Shaw was born in Glasgow, United Kingdom, in 1949. He studied at the University of Glasgow, where he completed a Master of Arts in history and political economy in 1970 and later pursued doctoral studies. His Scottish roots and academic training framed a career that combined corporate leadership with an interest in India.

Career

Shaw spent much of his professional life in senior roles with international companies. He served as chairman and managing director at Madura Coats, a leading textiles multinational, and was at one time managing director of the Viyella Group. In the late 1990s he became closely involved with Biocon, the Bengaluru-headquartered biopharmaceutical company founded by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.

In 1998 Shaw personally raised funds to acquire outstanding Biocon shares and, shortly thereafter, moved into a leadership role at the company. He joined Biocon in 1999 and took on responsibilities that included acting as a foreign promoter and participating on advisory boards for Biocon Group companies. Over more than two decades he served as Vice-Chairman and Non-Executive Director, helping to steer the company’s financial and strategic development and contributing to its transformation from a small enzymes business into a recognised global biopharmaceutical enterprise. Biocon noted his role in promoting corporate governance during his long association with the group.

Shaw superannuated from Biocon in July 2021 after more than 22 years with the company. His corporate experience also extended to advisory and governance roles across the group while he remained active in public business life.
