John Rao Prakash Rao Janumala was born on 14 August 1957 in Kanigiri, Andhra Pradesh, and raised in a Telugu Christian family. His father worked as an operator at Hindustan Lever Ltd. Financial hardship curtailed his formal education after the seventh grade. As a youngster in Mumbai, he supported himself by doing odd jobs, including selling pens while entertaining people with impressions of film stars. His mimicry skills earned him the nickname Johnny Lever after an office function at Hindustan Lever where senior staff were parodied.

Career

Lever developed his comedic craft performing with orchestras and joining shows linked to the Kalyanji-Anandji musical duo. He also worked for Hindustan Lever Ltd until 1981, when earnings from stage performances enabled him to leave the company and pursue entertainment full time. His stage work included international tours with Kalyanji-Anandji, and he moved into film and television work through opportunities that followed his visibility onstage.

His first credited Bollywood appearance came in 1985. A memorable commercial and a performance that caught the attention of veteran actor Sunil Dutt led to further film offers. Lever rose to wider recognition for his role in the 1993 film Baazigar and went on to build a prolific screen career. Over the years he has appeared in more than 350 films across languages, including Telugu and Tamil productions; his Telugu debut is listed as 1995 and his Tamil debut in 2011.
