Jos Buttler Biography

Joseph Charles 'Jos' Buttler is an English wicket‑keeper batter from Taunton, Somerset. A dynamic right‑handed batsman known for innovative strokeplay, he

Early life and background

Joseph Charles Buttler was born on 8 September 1990 in Taunton, Somerset. Raised locally, he attended Wedmore First School Academy and later King's College, Taunton, where he captained school cricket and combined strong academic results with a rapid rise through youth cricket. His parents are John and Patricia Buttler; his mother worked as a physical education teacher and tennis coach. He has an older brother, James, and an older sister, Joanne Vickers.

Buttler played multiple sports as a child, including tennis—becoming Somerset Under‑13 tennis champion at age nine—and continued to play football and squash for recreation. Early club and age‑group cricket assignments included a long list of Somerset age sides and school representative teams, and he moved to Glastonbury in 2006 to seek more opportunities to bat.

Career

A right‑handed wicket‑keeper batter, Buttler progressed through England’s age‑group pathways and made his way into professional domestic cricket with Somerset in 2009. He represented England at various youth levels, including the Under‑19 World Cup, and played for England Lions and other representative XIs before making full international appearances.

Buttler made his T20 international debut for England on 31 August 2011 versus India, his ODI debut on 21 February 2012 versus Pakistan, and his Test debut on 27 July 2014 against India. His early international breakthrough included a rapid late‑innings cameo in a September 2012 T20I against South Africa that prompted an incremental ECB contract.

In limited‑overs cricket Buttler became noted for his power and inventiveness. He recorded England’s fastest‑at‑the‑time ODI century in November 2014 and has held several partnership records across formats for England, including high‑value stands with teammates such as Adil Rashid, Zak Crawley and Dawid Malan. He became the first English player to score centuries in all three international formats and has twice been a leading run provider in major franchise tournaments.

In franchise and domestic competitions Buttler has turned out for Somerset, Lancashire and a long list of global T20 sides. His IPL career has included stints with Mumbai Indians and an extended association with Rajasthan Royals. He was retained by Rajasthan Royals ahead of a recent IPL auction and produced a prolific season in 2022, scoring four centuries and finishing as the tournament’s top run‑scorer, earning the Orange Cap and the season’s MVP honours. In South Africa’s SA20 competition he was among the highest‑paid players in the inaugural season after being signed by the Paarl Royals.

On the international stage Buttler took on leadership of England’s white‑ball teams, being appointed England’s white‑ball captain in June 2022. He led England to the 2022 T20 World Cup title in Australia and finished as England’s leading scorer in that tournament.

Style, records and honours

Buttler is widely recognised for an aggressive, inventive approach to batting, with favourite scoring methods including the pull and the scoop. His keeping and batting have produced a number of England records and notable achievements: record dismissals in an ODI match, multiple high partnerships across formats, the fastest ODI hundred for England at the time he set it, and milestones in both the IPL and international T20 cricket.

Honours include being named Young Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year, receiving the NBC Denis Compton Award twice, selection in ICC teams, and appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2020. He has also been publicly recognised by Somerset County Council.

Public profile

Buttler’s personal life is part of his public profile. He married Louise Webber in October 2017; the couple met at school and have two daughters, Georgia Rose (born April 2019) and Margot (born September 2021). He is based in Taunton and is known for an outgoing, sociable off‑field persona. He has openly spoken about enjoying social drinking on occasions and has named a preference for actor Shah Rukh Khan if a film were to be made about his life.

Buttler maintains a presence in franchise cricket around the globe and is often described as one of England’s most prominent T20 stars. His domestic and franchise list includes teams in the IPL, BBL, BPL, SA20 and The Hundred, reflecting a career that blends international leadership with a heavy franchise workload.
