Early life and background

Jothimani Sennimalai was born on 9 August 1975 in Dharapuram, Tirupur district, Tamil Nadu. She lost her father when she was thirteen and grew up in a family rooted in rural Tamil Nadu; her father Sennimalai was a farmer and her mother is Muthulakshmi. Her hometown is listed as Periya Thirumangalam in Aravakurichi, Karur district.

Jothimani completed a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and went on to earn a Master of Arts and a Master of Philosophy. She studied at institutions including Sri G.V.G. Visalakshi College for Women in Udumalaipet, Annamalai University and Bharathiyar University. While a student she was active in campus life, serving as chairperson of her college students union and participating in NSS and social service activities.

Career

Jothimani entered active politics in her early twenties by joining the Indian Youth Congress. Her first elected post came in 1996 when she won a seat as a Panchayat Union Councillor, a role she held for a decade until 2006. She later served in leadership positions within the youth wing of the Congress party, including roles as General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress and Vice President of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress.

She has taken part in political exchange programs and leadership forums abroad, representing the Indian Youth Congress at the American Council for Young Political Leaders in the United States in 2006 and at the Asian Young Leaders Summit in Malaysia in 2009. In 2010 she participated in the Asian Women Leaders Meet in New Delhi. Between 2006 and 2009 she served as a member of the Tamil Nadu Censor Board.

At the state and national level Jothimani contested several elections before securing a parliamentary seat. She stood in the 2011 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections and again in the 2014 general elections without winning. She announced plans to contest in 2016 but withdrew her candidacy. In 2019 she successfully contested the Lok Sabha election and became the Congress MP from the Karur constituency, the first Congress woman to win that seat.

Alongside her political work, Jothimani is a published writer. Her literary output includes at least three books — Ottrai Vasanai, Sithirak Koodu and Neer Pirakku Munn. She has received awards for her short fiction, including recognition for a short story selected in 1996 and later honours such as the Ilakkiya Chinthanai Award and the Shakthi Award for a short story collection.
