Early life and background

Jagat Prakash Nadda was born on 2 December 1960 in Patna, Bihar. He attended St. Xavier's High School in Patna before completing a Bachelor of Arts at Patna College and later earning a Bachelor of Laws from Himachal Pradesh University. His father, Dr. Narain Lall Nadda, served as Vice Chancellor of Patna University. Nadda comes from a Hindu Brahmin family and lists swimming among his hobbies.

Career

Nadda began his political journey as a student activist and participated in movements in the 1970s. He rose through organizational ranks in the BJP's youth wing and was appointed national president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1991 at the age of 31. He contested and won the Bilaspur seat in the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1993 and retained that constituency in subsequent elections, including victories in 1998 and 2007.

At the national level, Nadda served as Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare after the 2014 general election and has held ministerial responsibility for Forest, Environment, Science and Technology. In 2012 he became a member of the Rajya Sabha representing Himachal Pradesh.

In June 2019, following leadership changes in the BJP, Nadda was named National Working President of the party. On 20 January 2020 he was elevated to National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In January 2023 his tenure as party chief was extended through June 2024. He resigned his Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh on 4 March 2024 with a view to continue parliamentary work from Gujarat.

Throughout his organizational career Nadda has been given key responsibilities in election management. He was tasked with overseeing the party's campaign in Uttar Pradesh for the 2019 general election, where the BJP won a substantial majority of the state's seats under the party's leadership.
