Jude Anthany Joseph Biography

Jude Anthany Joseph is an Indian filmmaker, actor, writer and former software engineer from Kochi who rose to prominence in Malayalam cinema with his 2014‑

Early life and background

Born Sijo Joseph on 25 April 1983 in Kochi, Kerala, he later adopted the name Jude Anthany Joseph in 2014. He grew up in Kochi and completed schooling at St. Aloysius High School, North Paravur. For higher education he attended Union Christian College, Aluva and went on to earn a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from L. B. S. College of Engineering.

Before moving full time into the film industry, he worked in technology. In 2006 he joined Infosys as a software engineer and remained there until April 2009. He also spent a brief period at Mazhavil Manorama in 2011 as an associate program producer.

Career

Jude Anthany Joseph built his film career from assistant roles into directing, writing and acting. Early credits include assistant-director work on films such as Malarvaadi Arts Club (2010) and Thattathin Marayathu (2012). He made his directorial debut in 2014 with the romantic comedy Ohm Shanthi Oshaana, which brought him wider recognition and awards for a debut director and for scriptwriting.

Following that success he continued as a director and screenwriter on projects including Oru Muthassi Gadha (2016) and Sara’s (2021). In 2023 he co-wrote and directed the survival drama 2018 (also titled 2018: Everyone is a Hero). The film became a major commercial success and was selected as India’s official entry for the 2024 Academy Awards. Joseph has also appeared on screen in supporting and character roles — notable appearances include Premam (2015) as ‘Dolly D’Cruz’, a role in Velipadinte Pusthakam (2017), Love Action Drama (2019) and Voice of Sathyanathan (2023).

He has created short films as well, including Nakshathrangalude Rajakumaran, a tribute to actor Mammootty, and The Yellow Pen. He has taken on television work too, serving as a judge on the reality show Dance Kerala Dance from 2018–2019.

Public profile

Joseph’s professional life has been accompanied by public attention to his views and actions. Over the years he has faced controversy stemming from interactions with public figures and comments made on social media. In 2017 he was arrested briefly following a dispute related to a film shoot and later released on bail. He was also involved in a widely reported exchange during a discussion on portrayals of women in cinema the same year. In 2023 he publicly accused an actor of withdrawing from a project after receiving an advance; that claim and the actor’s response were reported in the press.

Outside his filmmaking, Joseph has been involved in philanthropic and cultural causes. He has supported initiatives such as Adopt an Artisan, Save our Culture and contributed to funding a shelter for the homeless in Pathanamthitta through a foundation run by a local philanthropist. He has spoken about the personal impact of the 2018 Kerala floods — losses that included damage to his own house — and how a short film created during that period became the seed for the larger feature 2018.

Personal life

Jude Anthany Joseph is married to Diyana Ann James; the couple married on 14 February 2015. They have two daughters, including Izabel Anna Jude. His parents are Joseph Thaliath and Rosamma PV, the latter of whom worked as a teacher. He has at least two siblings, including a sister named Jisa Joseph.

He is a practising Christian and has described a personal reason for changing his name to Jude Anthany Joseph: a vow made after a spiritual experience at a church in Angamaly.

Interests and public image

Joseph has expressed admiration for veteran actor Mammootty, and that respect has been reflected in his short‑form filmmaking. He keeps pets — notably rabbits — and is known to experiment with different personal styles and looks. He is listed as a non‑vegetarian and has a car that has been publicly associated with him.
