Early life and background

Juhi S. Chawla was born on 13 November 1967 in Ludhiana, Punjab, and spent part of her childhood in Ambala, Haryana, after her family relocated there a few months following her birth. She completed her schooling in Mumbai at Fort Convent School and went on to graduate from Sydenham College with a specialization in Human Resources. Juhi grew up in a household with mixed linguistic roots: her father spoke Punjabi and her mother spoke Gujarati.

Career

Juhi Chawla first came to national attention through the Femina Miss India pageant in 1984, where she won the Miss India crown and several subsidiary titles. Representing India at the Miss Universe pageant in Miami that year, she was awarded Best National Costume.

She made her film debut in the Hindi feature Sultanat (1986). Her breakthrough came with Mansoor Khan’s Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), in which she played Rashmi and which brought her widespread recognition.
