Julia Gama Biography

Brazilian model, actress and beauty queen Julia Gama built a cross-cultural career that spans pageants, film and international advocacy. A native of Porto

Early life and background

Julia Weissheimer Werlang Gama was born on May 18, 1993, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Raised in a middle-class household, she comes from a culturally mixed family with Italian, German, Lebanese and Portuguese roots. She has a younger brother and grew up in the same city that she lists as her hometown.

Gama enrolled at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul to study chemical engineering, but after completing her third year she left university to pursue opportunities in modeling and the arts. During her youth she developed language skills that would later help her career: she speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English and Mandarin.

Career

Julia Gama first came to wider attention through regional pageants. In 2012 she won the gaucho contest A Mais Bela Gaúcha and later represented her state at Miss Mundo Brazil 2014, winning that national title. That year she competed at Miss World and advanced into the contest’s final rounds, earning a scholarship that she used to study acting at Nu Espaço in Rio de Janeiro.

Her work has crossed national boundaries. Gama has been involved with Chinese entertainment and brands, including advertising for the Chinese cosmetic label Balincan in 2016. She was trained by Venezuelan coach Alexander Gonzalez during part of her preparation for international competitions.

Gama moved into film work in the Chinese market. Her feature debut came in Delírius Insurgentes (2017), in which she played the role of Miss Vi; the film screened at the Durban Film Festival in July 2017. She later appeared in the 2018 Chinese action film Invisible Tattoo. Her contributions to cultural exchange were recognized with an award from the Belt and the Road Chinese Government International Initiative in 2017.

In the pageant world she continued to advance. With national competitions disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Gama was appointed Miss Universe Brazil 2020 on August 20, 2020. She went on to represent Brazil at the Miss Universe 2020 pageant held in Florida, where she finished as first runner-up on May 26, 2021.

Outside of modeling and acting, Gama has been involved in advocacy and charity work. Early in her career she served as an international ambassador for leprosy, and during the 2020 pandemic she partnered with the charity Smile Train to support cleft lip and palate surgeries for children in Brazil.

Public profile

Physically, Gama is noted for her modeling measurements and presence: she stands approximately 177 cm (about 5′ 9½") tall, with reported measurements near 32-26-34 and a weight around 50 kg (110 lbs). Her hair and eyes are dark brown.

Her skills extend beyond performance and fashion—she studies acting, maintains a disciplined fitness routine, and enjoys dance and singing in her spare time. She has been described as the first Brazilian actress to make inroads into the Chinese film industry.

Latest updates

In 2020 and 2021 Gama experienced two major career moments: her appointment as Miss Universe Brazil 2020 and her placement as first runner-up at Miss Universe 2020. She continues to balance work in modeling, acting and philanthropic projects while maintaining an international profile.
