Early life and background
Julian Richard Morley Sands was born in Otley, West Yorkshire, England, on 4 January 1958. He grew up in Yorkshire with four brothers and developed an early love of the outdoors, spending much of his childhood hiking, camping and exploring the Dales and the Lake District. Those formative years also included time at village pantomimes and nativity plays, and a school headmaster encouraged him to pursue a scholarship. At 13 he won a place at Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire.

Sands went on to study acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where he formed an important friendship with filmmaker Derek Jarman. He continued to work in theatre after drama school, including with the Forum Theatre Company, while taking various odd jobs as he tried to establish himself as a screen actor.

Career
Julian Sands made his screen debut in 1982, appearing in film and television that year. Early in his career he worked with director Derek Jarman and appeared in promotional and experimental projects. His role as journalist Jon Swain in the Oscar-winning film The Killing Fields (1984) brought him wider attention and led to further notable parts.

Sands achieved international recognition for playing George Emerson in the 1985 period romance A Room with a View. That performance became the defining breakthrough of his early career and introduced him to a larger audience.

Across the late 1980s and 1990s he took on a wide variety of roles. He played the title antagonist in the supernatural horror Warlock (1989) and returned for its sequel Warlock: The Armageddon (1993). He appeared as an entomologist in the horror-comedy Arachnophobia (1990) and as a surgeon in the provocative drama Boxing Helena (1993). Sands also portrayed Percy Bysshe Shelley in the psychological horror film Gothic (1986) and took part in ensemble and experimental work such as the multi-screen Timecode (2000).

His film credits span mainstream and independent work, including The Killing Fields, Naked Lunch, Leaving Las Vegas, The Medallion, Ocean’s Thirteen and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. On television he reached U.S. viewers with recurring and guest roles, notably as Vladimir Bierko in season five of the drama series 24 and appearances on shows such as Smallville. He also provided voice work for animation, lending his voice to the character Valmont in Jackie Chan Adventures.

Throughout his career Sands continued to work on projects in development or post-production; at the time of his death he was attached to films in post-production.

He relocated to Los Angeles in the 1990s and divided his time between film, television and voice roles. Sands was married twice. His first marriage was to Sarah Harvey in 1984; the couple later divorced. He married writer Evgenia Citkowitz in 1990. He had three children: a son from his first marriage and two daughters from his second.

Sands maintained interests outside acting that echoed his youth: a love of travel and walking, and a lifelong affinity for the outdoors. He spent much of his life moving between the United Kingdom and the United States while pursuing an international career.

Death and aftermath
On 13 January 2023, Julian Sands went missing while hiking in the Mount San Antonio area (Mount Baldy) in the San Gabriel Mountains of California. Human remains were found in the vicinity of his disappearance on 24 June 2023 and were positively identified as his on 27 June 2023, confirming his death at age 65.
