Early life and background
Raghu Balaiah, professionally known as Junior Balaiah, was born on 28 June 1953 in Sundankottai, Tamil Nadu. He was the son of actor T. S. Balaiah and his mother Mallika. Raised in a family with ties to the performing arts, Balaiah grew up alongside siblings who also pursued careers in entertainment and music.

Career
Junior Balaiah made his film debut in 1975 and over the ensuing decades worked primarily in Tamil cinema in supporting roles. He appeared as a comedian, a character actor and occasionally as a villain. His filmography spans more than forty years and includes recognizable titles such as Karagattakaran (1989), Sundara Kandam (1992), Cheran Chozhan Pandian (1998), Aindhaam Thalaimurai Sidha Vaidhiya Sigamani (2014) and Nerkonda Parvai (2019), the Tamil remake of the Hindi film Pink.

Balaiah’s early career intersected with a family tragedy: his father, T. S. Balaiah, died in 1972 just days before the release of a film in which both had worked. That event affected the production of the film and marked a poignant moment in the younger Balaiah’s path into cinema.

Alongside his film work, Balaiah maintained a presence on television. He appeared in serials such as Chithi (2000–2001), in which he played the role of James on Sun TV, and Vazhkai (2000–2001) as the character Prabhakar’s father. He also featured in Chinna Papa Periya Papa (2014) Season 1 as Masanam. More recently, he took part in web content, appearing in the ZEE5 series Mugilan (2020). His last film credit was Yennanga Sir Unga Sattam (2021).

Public profile
Balaiah was active in industry organisations and participated in the activities of the Nadigar Sangam (South Indian Artistes Association). In 2014 he spoke of plans to start a film production company with the aim of helping his son pursue an acting career.

Personal life
Junior Balaiah was married and had two children, a son named Rohit and a daughter named Niveditha. He followed Christianity from around 2010 and established a healing ministry called Healing Stripes Ministry. His hair was described as salt-and-pepper and he had black eyes.

Later years and death
In later years Balaiah faced financial difficulties and personal challenges. He continued to work in film and television while also engaging in his ministry activities. On 2 November 2023 he died at his residence in Valasaravakkam, Chennai. He was 70 years old at the time and his death was reported as due to a heart attack; reports indicated he later suffered asphyxiation.
