Early life and background

Alok Aradhe was born on 13 April 1964 in Raipur, then part of Madhya Pradesh (now in Chhattisgarh). He completed his schooling in Madhya Pradesh and went on to earn a B.Sc and an LLB. Known to enjoy reading and travel, he is also reported to follow the teachings of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Career

Aradhe enrolled as an advocate at the Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur on 12 July 1988. He practised across a range of areas including civil, constitutional, arbitration and corporate law. Early in his career he assisted Chief Justice G. P. Singh with revisions of later editions of the textbook Principles of Administrative Law.

His judicial service began with an appointment as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 29 December 2009. He was confirmed as a Judge of that court on 15 February 2011 and served there until 16 September 2016. On 16 September 2016 he was transferred to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, where he later served as Acting Chief Justice from 11 May 2018 until 17 November 2018. While based in Jammu and Kashmir he took on institutional leadership roles, becoming chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir State Judicial Academy on 7 June 2017 and taking charge as executive chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir State Legal Services Authority on 4 September 2018.

On 17 November 2018 Aradhe was transferred to the Karnataka High Court. After the retirement of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, he was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on 3 July 2022.

In August 2022 Aradhe led a division bench of the Karnataka High Court that considered a petition seeking to prohibit the use of loudspeakers for the azaan. The bench refused to grant the prohibition, observing that freedom of religion under the Constitution is subject to permissible restrictions and that the petition did not establish that the azaan violated fundamental rights of others. The court did, however, direct authorities to ensure compliance with noise pollution regulations.

The Supreme Court collegium recommended Aradhe's name in July 2023 for appointment as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
