Ashish Jitendra Desai was born on 5 July 1962 in Vadodara, Gujarat. He studied in Ahmedabad, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Xavier’s College and later an LLB from Sir L. A. Shah Law College. He completed the Bar Council examination for Gujarat and enrolled as an advocate on 27 November 1985.

Career

Desai began his legal career as an apprentice in the office of M. C. Bhatt and Daksha M. Bhatt and initially practised at the City Civil and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad. He moved his practice to the Gujarat High Court in 1991 and built a practice across constitutional, civil, and criminal matters.

Over the years he has held several public-law positions: he served as Assistant Government Pleader in 1994 and as Additional Public Prosecutor in 1995. Between 2006 and 2009 he was Central Government Standing Counsel. His judicial career formally commenced with his appointment as an Additional Judge of the Gujarat High Court on 21 November 2011. He was confirmed as a Permanent Judge of that court on 6 September 2013.

On 26 February 2023, following the resignation of his predecessor, Desai was appointed Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
