Early life and background

Dhiraj Singh Thakur was born on 25 April 1964 in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir. He grew up in Jammu and Kashmir and pursued his legal education at Jammu University, where he completed an LLB. He is the son of Devi Das Thakur, a noted senior advocate who also served in judicial and gubernatorial roles, and Saraswati Thakur. His elder brother is Tirath Singh Thakur, who later became the 43rd Chief Justice of India.

Career

Thakur began his formal registration as an advocate on 18 October 1989 with the Bar Council of Delhi and initially practised at the Delhi High Court. In November 2010 he transferred his enrolment to the Bar Council of Jammu & Kashmir and subsequently worked from the chambers of his brother. He was recognised as a Senior Advocate in 2011.

On 8 March 2013 Thakur was elevated to the bench as a judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. Over the years on that court he handled a broad range of legal matters and developed a reputation for expertise across different branches of law.
