Early life and background

Prashant Kumar Mishra was born on 29 August 1964 in Raigarh, in what is now the state of Chhattisgarh. He grew up in a middle-class family in Raigarh and completed undergraduate and law studies at Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya in Bilaspur, earning a B.Sc. and an LL.B. His nationality is Indian and he follows Hinduism.

Career

Mishra enrolled as an advocate on 4 September 1987 and began practising in district courts in Raigarh as well as at the High Courts of Madhya Pradesh in Jabalpur and Chhattisgarh in Bilaspur. Over the years he handled matters across civil, criminal and writ jurisdictions, building a broad-based practice.

He served the state in several law-officer roles. In June 2004 he was appointed Additional Advocate General for Chhattisgarh and held that post until 31 August 2007, after which he became Advocate General of the state. In January 2005 the High Court of Chhattisgarh designated him as a senior advocate.

Beyond courtroom practice, Mishra took on professional leadership positions. He chaired the Chhattisgarh State Bar Council for a period, was co-opted to the Rule-Making Committee of the Chhattisgarh High Court, and acted as a Chancellor nominee on the Executive Council of Guru Ghasidas University. He also served ex officio on the governing body of Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur.

Judicial appointments followed his years at the bar. Mishra was appointed a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court on 10 December 2009. He became Acting Chief Justice of that court on 1 June 2021 and held the acting position until 11 October 2021.

On 13 October 2021 he took oath as the third Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court since the state’s bifurcation, with the oath administered at a ceremony in Vijayawada. As Chief Justice he also performed functions under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, including serving as Patron-in-Chief of the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority.

Mishra’s elevation to the Supreme Court of India came in May 2023. The Supreme Court collegium recommended his name on 16 May 2023, and he was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court on 19 May 2023. His elevation marked the first time a judge from the Chhattisgarh High Court was appointed to the Supreme Court.
