Early life and background

T. S. Sivagnanam was born on 16 September 1963 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in Chennai and completed his undergraduate education at Loyola College, Chennai, where he earned a Bachelor of Science. He went on to study law at Madras Law College and enrolled at the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu on 10 September 1986.

Career

Sivagnanam began his legal practice in Chennai, initially working in the chambers of senior advocate R. Gandhi. Over the next decade and more he built a practice that led to a string of government appointments: he served as Additional Standing Counsel to the Central Government and later as counsel for Southern Railway. He was named senior panel advocate for the Central Government in 2004 and represented a number of public bodies, including the All India Council for Technical Education, Customs & Central Excise, and the Department of Revenue in tribunals and settlement commission proceedings. In 2007 the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court nominated him to appear for the Registrar General, officers and judicial officers.

On 31 March 2009 Sivagnanam was appointed an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court and was made permanent two years later. While on the Madras High Court bench he chaired the court's Computer Committee. Under his leadership the committee expanded the court's digital capacity, acquiring licenses to support virtual hearings during the COVID-19 pandemic and introducing the National Service and Tracking of Electronic Process (NSTEP). The programme included procuring smartphones for process servers to improve the efficiency and traceability of service.

Sivagnanam was transferred to the Calcutta High Court and was sworn in as a judge there on 25 October 2021. He became Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court on 31 March 2023. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended him for appointment as Chief Justice on 9 February 2023, and the central government issued the notice of his appointment on 11 May 2023, making him the 33rd Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. His tenure as Chief Justice was to continue until his retirement on 15 September 2025.
