Early life and background

Ujjal Bhuyan was born on 2 August 1964 in Guwahati, Assam. He attended Don Bosco High School in Guwahati and went on to study at Cotton College (now Cotton University) before completing a bachelor’s degree in Arts at Kirori Mal College, Delhi. He earned his LLB from Bishnu Ram Medhi Government Law College in Guwahati and an LLM from Gauhati University.

Bhuyan comes from a family with a public profile. His father, Suchendra Nath Bhuyan, was active in political movements and later became involved with leftist causes; he was also known for philanthropic work in Assam. His mother is Subhadra Saikia. Justice Bhuyan has three sisters—Shagata, Anulekha and Jyoti—and is a married man with a daughter.

Career

Bhuyan enrolled with the Bar Council that covers Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 20 March 1991 and built a broad practice based at the Principal Seat of the Gauhati High Court. Over the years he appeared before benches in Agartala, Shillong, Kohima and Itanagar and practised across a number of forums including the Central Administrative Tribunal in Guwahati, the Assam Board of Revenue, labour courts, civil courts and the State Consumer Forum in Arunachal Pradesh.

He was then elevated to the Bombay High Court, where he served from 3 October 2019 to 21 October 2021. A brief tenure at the Telangana High Court followed from 22 October 2021 to 27 June 2022, after which he was appointed Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, serving from 28 June 2022 until 13 July 2023.
