Justin Langer Biography

Justin Lee Langer is a former Australian cricketer known for a prolific first-class career, a long Test run for Australia, and subsequent coaching roles. A

Early life and background

Justin Lee Langer was born on 21 November 1970 in Perth, Western Australia. He grew up in a sporting family: his father, Colin Langer, played club-level cricket and baseball at the state level, and his uncle Robbie (Rob) Langer also played first-class cricket. Justin attended Newman College and Aquinas College in Perth and later studied at the University of Western Australia, where selection to the Australian Cricket Academy interrupted his degree studies.

From a young age he drew inspiration from family members and developed interests beyond sport. He practised martial arts to a high standard, reaching the rank of Shodan-Ho in the Zen Do Kai system, and has long enjoyed reading and writing, interests that would later inform his work as an author and columnist.

Career

Langer made his international Test debut for Australia against the West Indies in Adelaide in January 1993 and played his first ODI in Sharjah against Sri Lanka in April 1994. He established himself as a mainstay of Australia’s batting lineup, famously occupying the number three and opening positions at different stages of his career.

Across 105 Test matches he scored 7,696 runs at an average of 45.27. His first-class record is especially notable: in 360 matches he amassed 28,382 runs at an average of 50.23, the highest aggregate recorded by an Australian in first-class cricket. Highlights of his playing days include a 250 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against England in 2002 and a triple-century-plus 342 for Somerset in county cricket.

Langer’s opening partnership with Matthew Hayden in the early and mid-2000s became one of the most productive pairings in Test history; the two opened together in more than 100 innings and combined for 5,654 runs.

He retired from Test cricket on 1 January 2007, stepping away after the fifth Ashes Test of that series. Post-retirement he moved into coaching and administration. From November 2009 to November 2012 he served as Australia’s batting coach and senior assistant coach. In November 2012 he was appointed senior coach of Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers. He joined the West Coast Eagles football club board in July 2017 and in May 2018 took responsibility for coaching the Australian national cricket team.

Writing, interests and public work

Langer has combined his sporting life with a parallel career as a writer. He authored several books, including a cricket diary of county life, an autobiography titled The Power of Passion, a diary of the 2006–07 Ashes series, and a book on maximizing physical and mental goals. He has maintained a regular column called “Langer’s Postcards” on the Baggy Green website. Known among teammates and commentators for his reflective approach, he has been described by peers as one of the leading cricketer-writers in Australia.

He has been involved in community and charitable endeavours as a patron of children’s leukaemia and cancer research in Western Australia and as an ambassador for Solaris Cancer Care at Brookfield. His personal faith and exposure to Buddhist practices during tours have been noted by Langer as sources of strength during family health challenges.

Public profile

Physically, Langer is listed at approximately 177 cm (5'10") and 70 kg (154 lbs). Over the course of his career he earned several nicknames within cricketing circles. His on-field record and off-field writing combined to keep him prominent in Australian cricket long after his playing days ended. He has also worked outside cricket in business, including experience with a stockbroking firm and entrepreneurial activity.

Latest updates

After his playing retirement Langer’s coaching career progressed from national roles to state and franchise responsibilities. His appointments included senior coach of Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers, membership on the West Coast Eagles board, and later the head coaching role with the Australian national side in 2018. He continues to be involved in writing and public commentary related to sport and personal development.
