Jwala Gutta was born on 7 September 1983 in Wardha, Maharashtra, and grew up in Hyderabad. She comes from a diverse family background: her father is Kranti Gutta and her mother is Yelan Gutta. Her mother’s family includes a grandfather who visited India in 1971 and was involved with translating Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography into Chinese.

Gutta was introduced to sport at a very young age. She learned gymnastics and swimming before beginning structured badminton training, and first picked up the racket at around age six. When she was four, her father put her in contact with national coach S. M. Arif, who became an important mentor for her development.
