Early life and background

Jyotipriya Mallick was born on 26 May 1958 in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal. Raised in the city he continues to call home, Mallick attended The Scottish Church Collegiate School, completing his schooling in 1975. He went on to study science at Vidyasagar College, earning a BSc in 1979, and later completed a law degree (LLB) from Surendranath College in 1983. During his college years in the 1970s he was active in the student union.

Career

Mallick pursued a dual professional path as a lawyer and a politician. He entered electoral politics with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) and first won a seat in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Gaighata constituency in 2001, retaining it in 2006. After a constituency change, he won the Habra seat in the 2011 state elections and was re-elected from Habra in 2016 and again in 2021.

Within state government, Mallick has held several ministerial portfolios. Following the 2011 elections he served as the minister in charge of Food & Supplies from 20 May 2011 until 10 May 2021. In the 2021 ministry reshuffle he moved to departments that include Forests and Non-Conventional & Renewable Energy Sources, posts he has held since 10 May 2021. He has also been associated with Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction in ministerial responsibilities.

Beyond ministerial duties, Mallick has taken on roles in public sector bodies. He became a director of the West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation Limited on 26 December 2007 and, on 2 November 2021, assumed a directorship at the West Bengal Essential Commodities Supply Corporation Ltd.
