Early life and background

K. C. Venugopal was born on 4 February 1963 in Kandonthar, Payyanur, in the Kannur district of Kerala. Raised in a family where his father preferred a conventional career for him and his mother supported his political ambitions, Venugopal pursued higher education in Kerala. He earned a Master of Science in Mathematics from Calicut University in 1986 and later completed an LLB. He attended Payyannur College in Kannur district during his student years.

Venugopal comes from a Hindu Nair family and lists his hometown as Payyanur in Kannur district. He stands around 5'10" (178 cm) and is described as having black hair and black eyes. Career

Venugopal's political life began in the student wing of the Indian National Congress. He held multiple posts in the Kerala Students Union, rising from unit-level responsibilities to become State President of the KSU in 1988, a post he held for five years. He also served as a University Union Councillor and later as a member of the Kerala University Senate. Between 1993 and 2000 he was President of the Youth Congress in Kerala.

He entered electoral politics with his first Legislative Assembly victory in 1996, retaining the Alappuzha assembly seat in 2001 and 2006. Venugopal served in the Kerala state government and was a minister in Oommen Chandy's administration in 2004. He transitioned to national politics when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Alappuzha in 2009 and served as a Member of Parliament in the lower house until 2019.

At the federal level, Venugopal held junior ministerial responsibilities during the UPA II government. He was Minister of State for Power from 20 January 2011 to 28 October 2012 and then Minister of State for Civil Aviation from 28 October 2012 until 26 May 2014. During this period he was part of the Union Council of Ministers under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Within the All India Congress Committee, Venugopal has held organisational responsibilities. He was appointed General Secretary of the AICC in April 2017 and served as General Secretary for Karnataka from June 2018 to September 2020. He became General Secretary (Organisation) of the AICC in 2019. In June 2020 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha, representing Rajasthan. He continued to play a key role in the party’s election operations, managing Congress war rooms and organisation efforts that contributed to the party’s performance in state contests, including a strong showing in the 2023 Karnataka elections.

In the 2024 general elections he returned to electoral politics in Kerala, winning the Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat.
