Early life and backgroundKalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao was born on 17 February 1954 in Siddipet, then part of Hyderabad State. He studied at Osmania University, where he completed a Master of Arts in Literature. Raised in a large family, Rao is the son of Raghavar Rao and Venkatamma and has several siblings.
Career
Rao entered politics in the 1980s. He initially joined the Telugu Desam Party in 1983 and contested state assembly elections that year. Over the next decade he established himself in state politics, winning successive assembly elections from Siddipet between 1985 and 1999. During this period he served in ministerial roles in state government, including a stint as Minister of Drought and Relief in N. T. Rama Rao’s cabinet and later as Transport Minister under Chandrababu Naidu. He was also elected Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly for a time around 2000–2001.
In April 2001 Rao resigned from the Telugu Desam Party and from his assembly post to focus on a regional movement. He founded the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) that same year to press for a separate Telangana state. TRS contested elections in the years that followed, at times in alliance with national parties, and Rao continued to contest both assembly and parliamentary seats. He served as a Member of Parliament from Mahbubnagar between 2009 and 2014.
Rao was a central figure in the decades-long campaign for statehood. His activism included periods of protest, and the movement culminated with the creation of Telangana in 2014. When the new state was formed, Rao became its first Chief Minister and was administered the oath of office on 2 June 2014.
As chief minister Rao pursued a range of initiatives aimed at agriculture, water resources and social welfare. Early in his tenure he launched Mission Kakatiya to restore and rejuvenate tens of thousands of tanks and lakes. He later launched the large-scale Kaleshwaram irrigation project intended to expand irrigated land in Telangana. His government also introduced schemes such as Amma Vodi and the KCR Kit program aimed at supporting pregnant and lactating women.
Rao has held leadership of his party through multiple terms, serving repeatedly as TRS president. He continued to contest state elections; in 2023 he won the Gajwel assembly seat by a margin of 45,031 votes while losing the Kamareddy seat to a rival candidate.

Rao married K. Shobha on 23 April 1969. The couple has two children who are active in public life: son K. T. Rama Rao and daughter Kalvakuntla Kavitha.
