Kalvakuntla Kavitha was born on 13 March 1978 in Karimnagar, then part of Andhra Pradesh and now in Telangana. Daughter of Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao and K. Shobha, she grew up in a family that later became central to Telangana’s political landscape. She attended Stanley Girls High School in Hyderabad and went on to study engineering, earning a B.Tech in computer science. She also pursued further studies at the University of Southern Mississippi and holds an MA in science.

Kavitha spent several years living and working in the United States after her marriage in 2003, where she worked as a software engineer before returning to India in 2006. Kavitha is a member of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (formerly Telangana Jagruthi). She helped build public engagement around Telangana’s cultural traditions, notably promoting the Bathukamma festival, and she established skill centres aimed at training young people for employment.

Her parliamentary career includes winning the 2014 general election from the Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency by a substantial margin. During her term she served on parliamentary committees including the Estimates Committee, the Standing Committee on Commerce and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water and Sanitation. In 2019 she contested the Nizamabad seat again but was defeated.

In October 2020 Kavitha was elected to the Telangana Legislative Council from the Nizamabad Local Authorities’ Constituency and was re-elected in the biennial polls in 2021. She took oath as a Member of the Legislative Council on 19 January 2022.

Beyond elected office, Kavitha has held leadership roles in social and labour organisations within the state. She has served as honorary president of the Telangana Rashtra Vidyut Karmika Sangham, representing electricity employees, and of the Telangana Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association.
