Early life and background
K. Radhakrishnan was born on 24 May 1964 in Pullikkanam Vagamon, Kerala. He grew up in Thrissur and completed his schooling at Aided Upper Primary School in Thonoorkara and SMTGHSS in Chelakkara. He later attended Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, where he earned a BA in Economics between 1985 and 1988. His parents are M.C. Kochunni and Chinna.

Career
Radhakrishnan’s political life began in student activism. He was involved with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) during his college years and went on to hold multiple organisational roles in youth and labour groups. Over time he served as unit secretary at his college, held positions in the District Secretariat of Thrissur, and took leadership roles in the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) at block and state levels. He also led the Dalit Soshan Mukti Manch (D.S.M.M.) nationally and held state-level presidencies in farm workers’ and industrial labour unions.

He entered electoral politics in the early 1990s, winning a seat on the Thrissur District Council from Vallathol Nagar in 1991. He was first elected as the MLA for the Chelakkara constituency in 1996 and retained that seat in subsequent elections in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2021. Between 1996 and 2001 he served as Minister for the Welfare of Backward and Scheduled Communities and Youth Affairs. From 3 June 2006 to 13 May 2011 he was the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

Within his party, Radhakrishnan became a Central Committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). In the government formed in 2021, he was appointed Minister for the Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes, Devaswoms, and Parliamentary Affairs. In 2024 he won the Lok Sabha election from the Alathur constituency in Kerala.
