Károly Takács was born on 21 January 1910 in Budapest, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary. Raised in the city that would remain central to his life and career, he later served as a non-commissioned officer in the Hungarian army. Career

Takács rose through Hungary’s shooting ranks before World War II. In 1936 he sought a place on the national Olympic team but was prevented from joining because of his military rank; that restriction was removed in Hungary after the Berlin Games. While continuing his service, he competed successfully at national level.

In 1938 a training accident severely injured his right hand. Rather than end his shooting career, Takács taught himself to shoot with his left hand. He practised in secret and returned to competition quickly: in early 1939 he won the Hungarian national pistol shooting championship and was a member of Hungary’s team at the 1939 UIT World Shooting Championships.

Takács’s most notable achievements came at the Olympic Games. At age 38 he captured the gold medal in the 25-metre rapid-fire pistol at the 1948 London Olympics, defeating the world champion Carlos Enrique Díaz Sáenz Valiente. Four years later he repeated as Olympic champion in the same event at Helsinki in 1952. He also competed at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, finishing eighth.

Across his domestic career he amassed an extraordinary tally of national titles, winning 35 Hungarian national shooting championships. After retiring from international competition he remained active in the sport as a coach. He served as mentor to shooters including Szilárd Kun, who won a silver medal at the 1952 Olympics.
