Early life and backgroundK. Sivasankar was born on 7 December 1948 on Govindappa Naicken Street in the Parrys area of Chennai. He grew up in the city and attended primary schooling at home before studying at Hindu Theological Higher Secondary School in Sowcarpet. As a child he developed an interest in drama and dance, studying with local teachers and performing at festivals. He suffered a serious accident in childhood but recovered by the age of eight.
Career
Sivasankar began his film career in the mid-1970s. He worked as an assistant dancer on the Tamil film Paattum Bharathamum (1975) and later started working as a dance master, with one of his early credits as dance master on Kuruvikoodu (1980). Over the following decades he established himself as a sought-after choreographer in South Indian cinema, contributing to films across Tamil and Telugu industries.
His body of work includes choreography on films such as Kavikkuyil (1977), Khaidi (1983), En Aasai Machan (1994), Magadheera (2009) and Baahubali: The Beginning (2013). His choreography on the historical drama Magadheera earned him the National Film Award for Best Choreography. He was also a multiple recipient of the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Choreographer, honored for Poove Unakkaga (1996), Vishwa Thulasi (2003), Varalaru (2006) and Uliyin Osai (2008). In recognition of his contributions to dance he received an honorary doctorate from the New International Christian University in Bangalore in 2003.
Sivasankar also appeared on screen as an actor. He had an acting credit in the Tamil film Alai (2003) as a dance master and later appeared in a number of South Indian films including Varalaru (2006), Paradesi (2013), N.T.R: Kathanayakudu (2019), Pachai Vilakku (2020) and Engada Iruthinga Ivvalavu Naala (2021). His television work included appearances in serials such as the Tamil drama Jothi (2021) and the Telugu series No.1 Kodalu (2021). His television debut in Telugu came earlier with Naga Bhairavi (2020) in which he played the character Shivudu.
Public profile
Sivasankar was known within the film community for his long career as a choreographer and for mentoring dancers. Physically he was listed at approximately 165 cm (5'5") with brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair. He was married to Suganya and had two sons, Vijay Sivasankar and Ajay Sivasankar. His parents were Kalyana Sundaram, a wholesale fruit vendor in Kothawal Chavadi, Chennai, and Komala Amal.
In 2016 a dispute involving family members became public when allegations were made by his daughter-in-law. Around that time he also publicly requested security assistance from the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Final illness and passing
In 2021 Sivasankar tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to AIG Hospital in Hyderabad. His family made appeals for financial assistance to cover medical expenses, and several members of the film fraternity contributed toward his care. He died on 28 November 2021 at AIG Hospital in Hyderabad. He was 72 years old at the time of his death.
