Early life and background

K. Venkatesan Anand was born on 30 October 1966 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He completed a degree in physics and went on to pursue postgraduate studies in visual communications. During his college years he took part in adventurous activities such as trekking and developed an early interest in photography, competing in state and national photography contests.

After finishing his studies Anand worked as a freelance photojournalist for magazines and newspapers. He contributed to publications including Kalki, Illustrated Weekly and India Today, among others, before moving into a career in cinema.

Career

Anand began his film career as a cinematographer. His debut in Malayalam cinematography came with Thenmavin Kombath in 1994, work that brought him significant recognition, including the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for that project. Over the years he worked across multiple Indian film industries, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Transitioning from cinematography to direction, Anand made his directorial debut with Kana Kandaen in 2005. He went on to direct several Tamil films through the 2000s and 2010s, establishing himself as a commercially successful filmmaker. Notable directorial credits include Ayan (2009), Ko (2011), Maattrraan (2012), Anegan (2015) and Kavan (2017). Ayan in particular reached a wide audience, selling an estimated one crore tickets worldwide.
