Kabir Bedi was born on 16 January 1946 in Lahore, then part of the Punjab Province of British India. He grew up in a family engaged with public life: his father was an author and philosopher and his mother later became a Buddhist nun. Bedi attended schools in New Delhi and elsewhere in India and completed a BA (History Hons.) at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.

As a child he was exposed to theatre and religious life. He performed in a stage play at age seven and, for a brief period in childhood, was ordained and lived in a monastery where he practiced meditation. He later worked part time as an English newsreader at All India Radio while in college.

Bedi began his professional life in Mumbai working behind the scenes in advertising and radio, first at Lintas and later at Ogilvy & Mather, where he wrote and directed film and radio spots.
