Early life and background
Kailash Vijayvargiya was born on 13 May 1956 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where he grew up in a middle-class family. He completed his schooling at Government Higher Secondary School Nanda Nagar, Indore, finishing in 1974. Vijayvargiya went on to study at P. M. B. Gujarati Science College, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1979, and later obtained an LLB from Indore Christian College affiliated with Devi Ahilya University in 2002.

He is known locally by the nicknames Bhai and Bhaiya. Vijayvargiya is married to Asha Vijayvargiya, and the couple have sons Akash Vijayvargiya and Kalpesh Vijayvargiya, both of whom are involved in politics. His father, Shankar Dayal Vijayvargiya, was also active in public life.

Career
Vijayvargiya’s political involvement began in student politics when he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. He formally entered the BJP ecosystem through the Vidyarthi Parishad in 1975 and became part of the party’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, in 1979.

At the municipal level he served as a corporator of the Indore Municipal Corporation in 1983 and became a member of its standing committee in 1985. He advanced through party ranks, becoming state coordinator of the Vidyarthi Parishad and later state vice-president of the BJYM in 1992. Vijayvargiya was elected mayor of Indore in 2000 as the city’s first directly elected mayor, and during his mayoral tenure he took on roles such as president of the South Asia Mayors’ Council and led an Indian team to the World Earth Summit in Durban in 2003.

Vijayvargiya has been elected repeatedly to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, winning seats in 1990, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013. In state government he has held several portfolios: in July 2004 he managed Religious Trusts, Endowment, and Rehabilitation; in 2005 he was assigned Public Works, Information Technology, and Science & Technology; and in December 2008 he was sworn in as a cabinet minister with responsibilities that included Public Works, Parliamentary Affairs, Urban Administration and Development.

At the national level he was appointed National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2015 and was given charge of the party’s organisation in West Bengal. He also served as the BJP’s in-charge for the Haryana assembly campaign in 2014, when the party significantly increased its seat tally. In the 2023 Madhya Pradesh legislative elections he won the Indore-1 constituency and later, on 28 December 2023, resigned as National General Secretary to take office as a cabinet minister in the Madhya Pradesh government.

Vijayvargiya’s public life includes recognition and awards from both national and international bodies. During his municipal leadership he received an award at the World Conference of Mayors in Honolulu in 2001 and was recognised by the United Nations in 2006 for work connected to the Millennium Development Goals. State-level honours include a National Goodwill Award from the Madhya Pradesh government in 2007. He was also listed among India’s top 100 influential people in 2021.

Outside politics, Vijayvargiya has a history of involvement in small businesses before his full-time political career, including ventures in beverages, a plant in Delhi, a firecracker business and a soap agency. He continues to maintain a traditional grocery shop in Indore, where he is known to sell goods on the occasion of Dhanteras.
