Kainaz Motivala was born on 20 November 1986 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She grew up in a family where her father worked as a Merchant Navy captain. Kainaz attended Jai Hind College in Mumbai and completed a Bachelor of Mass Media. Gujarati is her mother tongue, and she is also fluent in English, Hindi and German.

Before entering films she worked in journalism; after graduating she was employed with HAIR Magazine in India. A planned Master’s course in journalism in London was reportedly offered to her, but she changed direction and pursued opportunities in the entertainment industry.

Career

Kainaz began her acting career after being noticed while coordinating a makeover shoot for HAIR Magazine. An assistant director from the film Paathshaala approached her to audition, and she took a sabbatical from her magazine job to begin working in films.

Her first credited film appearance was in Wake Up Sid (2009), in which she played the character Tanya. She followed that with a role as Shailey in Paathshaala (2010). In 2011 she played the lead role of Ragini in the horror-thriller Ragini MMS, and later made a cameo in Ragini MMS 2 (2014). Other film credits include Challo Driver (2012), where she portrayed Tanya Malhotra, and a Telugu film debut in Boochamma Boochodu (2014) as Sravani.

Outside of feature films, Kainaz has modelled for magazines, appeared in fashion shows and featured in television commercials for a range of brands such as Uninor, McDonald’s, Videocon, Sony PIX and Tata Vista. She has trained in dance under Shiamak Davar for six years and was selected for one of his special potential batches.

Kainaz has also pursued fitness instruction and, in 2015, was appointed as a Zumba instructor. Writing is another creative interest: she has published short stories, including work in Urban Shots, an anthology of urban tales by young writers.
