Early life and backgroundKalanithi Maran was born on 24 July 1965 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a family active in public life and completed his schooling at Don Bosco, Egmore, Chennai. He earned a B.Com degree from Loyola College, Chennai, and went on to complete an MBA at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. Maran is an Indian national and follows Hinduism.
Career
Maran launched his media career in the early 1990s. In 1990 he started a Tamil monthly video magazine called Poomaalai. Using a bank loan guaranteed by his father together with his own savings, he founded Sun TV on 14 April 1993 and later expanded the operation into Sun Group. Sun TV was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange in April 2006.
Under Maran’s leadership, Sun Group grew from a single channel into a broad media conglomerate. The network expanded to operate roughly 35 channels across six languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi and Malayalam. The group extended into radio with brands such as Suryan FM, Red FM and Magic FM; into publishing with newspapers and magazines including Dinakaran, Tamil Murasu and Malai Murasu; into film production through Sun Pictures; and into digital streaming with Sun NXT. In 2007 the group also launched a direct-to-home service, Sun Direct.
Beyond broadcasting and publishing, Maran moved into sports and aviation. He is a co-owner of the Indian Premier League franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. In 2010 he was appointed promoter director and chairman of SpiceJet and held a significant stake in the airline through 2015.

Maran has received several industry honours over the years. Early recognition included the Indian Television Academy Award for Best TV Channel in 2001. He was named CNBC’s Young Businessman in 2006 and received Entrepreneur of the Year at TiECON Chennai in 2009. In 2024 he was honored with Hurun India’s Most Respected Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
