Kalpana Patowary Biography

Kalpana Patowary is an Indian folk and playback singer, actress and politician from Sorbhog in Barpeta district, Assam. She rose to prominence through work

Early life and background

Kalpana Patowary was born on 27 October 1978 in Sorbhog, a town in the Barpeta district of Assam. She grew up in a musical household: her father Bipin Nath Patowary was a folk singer and encouraged her early participation in performances. Kalpana trained in Indian classical music and attended Bhatkhande Music Institute University in Lucknow, where she earned the Sangeet Visharad qualification. She later graduated in English literature from Cotton College Guwahati.

From childhood she performed on local stages with her father and gave early broadcasts on All India Radio and Doordarshan. By the age of twelve she had begun performing Bhojpuri songs on stage, an early sign of the direction her career would take.

Career

Kalpana Patowary built a multilingual singing career that spans regional film industries and folk traditions. Her first recorded film song came in Tamil in 1999, and in the following years she recorded in Assamese, Bhojpuri, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and several other languages. Notable early milestones include an Assamese film song in 2002 and a Bhojpuri music album released in 2003 that brought her widespread recognition.

After relocating to Mumbai in 2001, she continued to expand her repertoire, recording songs in Punjabi, Rajasthani, Odia and Bhojpuri. Her Bhojpuri debut single in 2003 achieved viral popularity and helped establish her as a leading voice in that industry. She has been credited with presenting the Khaati Biraha tradition on international stages, bringing attention to an older folk form through contemporary performances.

In addition to playback singing, Patowary has worked in films. She made her acting debut in the 2006 Bhojpuri feature Chalat Musafir Moh Liyo Re, playing the role of Janki opposite Dinesh Lal Yadav. She also appeared in the 2013 Bhojpuri documentary Bidesia in Bambai, which explores the experiences of migrant farmers in Mumbai.

Her career includes contributions across many regional cinemas: a Hindi film song in 2007, a Bengali film song in 2007, and a Marathi film song released in 2016 are among the entries in her body of work. She has performed item numbers and playback songs that have made her a familiar name in multiple language markets.
