Early life and background
Kalyan Banerjee was born on 4 January 1957 in Asansol in the Burdwan district of West Bengal. He studied at Bankura Sammilani College and completed a B.Com from the University of Burdwan before earning an LLB. After finishing his legal education, Banerjee began practising at the Calcutta High Court in 1981 and later gained recognition as a senior advocate there.

Career
Banerjee entered active politics in 1991 when he joined the Indian National Congress and served as vice president of the West Bengal Youth Congress. He shifted to the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998 and quickly took on leadership roles, including general secretary of the West Bengal unit and later vice president at the national level for the party.

At the state level he won election to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Asansol constituency in 2001. He moved into national politics with election to the 15th Lok Sabha in 2009 from the Srerampur constituency and secured re-election in 2014 and 2019. During his parliamentary career he has held several internal party and parliamentary responsibilities: in 2014 he was appointed Chief Whip of the All India Trinamool Congress in the Lok Sabha, and in 2020 he became chairman of the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC). He also won the Srerampur Lok Sabha seat again in 2024.

Throughout his terms in parliament Banerjee has been involved with multiple standing and consultative committees. He chaired the Standing Committee on Coal and Steel and served on panels including the Committee on Privileges, the Committee on Ethics, and joint committees addressing telecom licensing, land acquisition and related legislative matters. He represented Indian parliamentary interests abroad as part of a United Nations Parliamentary delegation in 2009 and attended the CPA Global Seminar in Vienna in 2013 as the lone representative from the CPA India Union.

In October 2024 he was suspended for a day from a parliamentary committee meeting after an outburst in which he damaged a glass bottle and injured his hand during debates on the Waqf Bill.
