Early life and background

Kalyan Chaubey was born on 16 December 1976 in Kolkata, West Bengal. He trained at the Tata Football Academy and rose through India’s youth system, earning selection to the national under-age sides in the mid-1990s. His early education included time at Tata Workers Union High School Kadma, and he went on to complete formal football training at the Tata Football Academy.

Career

Chaubey established himself as a goalkeeper and began representing India at youth level in 1994 at the Asian Youth Championship. During his playing career he turned out for several of India’s leading clubs. He played for Mohun Bagan in the mid-1990s, moved to East Bengal for a spell through 1999, then returned to Mohun Bagan. He went on to represent Salgaocar, Mahindra United, JCT, and Mumbai FC, among others, and represented multiple states at the Santosh Trophy from 1994 to 2010.

At international level Chaubey was part of India’s senior setup from 1999 to 2006 and was a member of squads that won regional honours in that period. He earned individual recognition as the All India Football Federation’s Best Goalkeeper of the Year in both 1998 and 2001, and he was part of the India squad that won gold at regional championships and collected medals at the South Asian Games.

After retiring from playing in 2010 Chaubey moved into football management and development. He worked with Aspire Sports World as a director, took on executive responsibilities at the Mohun Bagan Football School and coordinated a joint initiative between Kolkata police and the British Council to support underprivileged children seeking careers in football. He founded the Ekalavya Sports & Skill Development Foundation in 2015 and later earned coaching credentials from the Asian Football Confederation.

In 2022 Chaubey was elected president of the All India Football Federation. His appointment was notable for being the first time a former Indian footballer assumed the post since independence. Upon taking office he spoke about producing a realistic, accountable plan for Indian football and involving leading figures from the game to address the sport’s challenges. He said the federation would present a roadmap for Indian football within 100 days of his appointment.

Politics and public life

Chaubey joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2015 and contested elected office for the party in both national and state polls. He stood as the BJP candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Krishnanagar and later contested the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election from Maniktala. He has also authored a book on Indian football titled Immature, published in 2019.

Beyond playing and administration, Chaubey has worked as a football commentator for domestic tournaments and international events, including appearances covering the Indian Super League, the I-League, the Calcutta Football League and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
