Early life and background

Kalyan Singh was born on 5 January 1932 in the village of Mdholi in Atrauli tehsil, Aligarh district, in what was then the United Provinces of British India (now Uttar Pradesh). He completed his higher education at Dharm Samaj Mahavidhyalaya in Aligarh and held a B.A. and an L.L.B. Before entering electoral politics he worked as a teacher and was an active full-time volunteer with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Career

Kalyan Singh began his legislative career with his election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1967, a tenure that continued through 1980. He entered party politics with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and later became a long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party after its formation in 1980. His political trajectory included periods of both alignment and separation from the BJP; in 1999 he founded the Rashtriya Kranti Party and later returned to the BJP at the request of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In June 1991, following a BJP victory in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Kalyan Singh became Chief Minister of the state for the first time. He resigned on 6 December 1992 in the aftermath of the Babri mosque demolition. He later returned as Chief Minister in 1997 and remained in that office until 1999. During his time as chief minister his government implemented measures such as the Anti-Copying Act in 1992 and promoted certain cultural practices in primary schools when the BJP regained power in 1997.

Kalyan Singh also served at the national level. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Bulandshahr constituency in the 2004 general election. In 2009 he contested the general election as an independent from Etah and won. That year he joined the Samajwadi Party for a period, before returning to the BJP in 2013.

In the later phase of his career he was appointed to gubernatorial positions. On 4 September 2014 he was sworn in as Governor of Rajasthan. He also held additional charge as Governor of Himachal Pradesh from 28 January 2015 until 12 August 2015.

Public profile

Kalyan Singh was a prominent and sometimes polarizing figure in Uttar Pradesh politics. His name featured in legal proceedings related to the 1992 demolition of the Babri mosque; he was among those accused in cases filed at the time, and in September 2020 a Special CBI Court in Lucknow acquitted 32 accused in the consolidated case, including him and several other political leaders. The Supreme Court later ruled on the status of the Ayodhya site and ordered that a temple be constructed there.

He spent 21 months in jail during the national Emergency in the mid-1970s and was known for close associations with senior BJP leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Personal interests noted in his public profile included watching news and kabaddi, listening to music, and reading religious scriptures. He followed Hinduism and belonged to the Lodhi caste. Known family members who are active in politics include his son Rajveer Singh, who was elected to Parliament in 2014, and his grandson Sandeep Kumar Singh, who has served as a minister of state for education in the Uttar Pradesh government.

Personal life and death

Kalyan Singh was married to Ramwati Devi. His parents were Tejpal Singh Lodhi and Sita Devi. He maintained a vegetarian diet and listed interests such as travel to destinations like Singapore and Thailand and sports including kabaddi and table tennis.

He died on 21 August 2021 at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow. He was 89 years old. Reported causes of death included sepsis and multi-organ failure.
