Kamal Sadanah was born on 21 October 1970 in Mumbai, India. He grew up in a family connected to the film business: his father Brij Sadanah was a filmmaker and his mother Sayeeda Khan was an actress. His uncle Chander Sadanah worked as a film producer, and members of that generation include cousins who are active in cinema.

Sadanah studied aspects of filmmaking at the New York Film Academy, completing courses in technical film-making and a specialised course in visual effects. From a young age he had an interest in acting, and by the time he was about 20 he had begun managing his father’s production house.

Career

Sadanah’s onscreen career began with his acting debut in the 1992 Bollywood film Bekhudi. He followed that with roles in several Hindi films through the 1990s, including Rang (1993), Fauj (1994), Jai Maa Vaishnav Devi (1995), Angaara (1996) and Mohabbat Aur Jung (1998). His performance as Yogi Joshi in Rang brought him wider recognition.

Alongside acting, Sadanah expanded into production and direction. He is credited as a producer on the 1990 film C.I.D. and took on both directing and acting duties for Karkash (2005). In 2007 he produced Victoria No. 203: Diamonds Are Forever, a contemporary remake of the 1972 film originally directed and produced by his father; in that project he also portrayed a villainous character.

In 2014 Sadanah wrote and directed Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans. After a long gap from mainstream releases he returned to the screen in 2022, appearing alongside his Bekhudi co-star Kajol in Salaam Venky.
