Early life and background

Kamala Surayya was born Kamala Nair on 31 March 1934 in Punnayurkulam in what was then the Malabar District of British India (present-day Thrissur district, Kerala). The daughter of V. M. Nair, a newspaper editor and senior officer, and Nalapat Balamani Amma, a noted Malayalam poet, she grew up in a literary household. She began writing very young: her first poem was published by P.E.N. India when she was a teenager, and she continued to produce work in both English and Malayalam throughout her life.

Career

Writing under her own name and the Malayalam pen name Madhavikutty, Kamala Surayya made an early mark as a poet. Her debut English collection, Summer in Calcutta, appeared in 1965. Subsequent English collections and Malayalam works expanded her reputation: titles mentioned among her output include The Descendants, The Old Playhouse and Other Poems, Only the Soul Knows How to Sing, Tonight, This Savage Rite, and several Malayalam volumes such as Naricheerukal Parakkumbol and Swathanthrya Samara Senaniyude Makal.

She wrote across forms—poetry, short stories, essays, columns and a novel—and her autobiography My Story, published in 1976, attracted wide attention for its candid account of her life, relationships and creative development. The autobiography was translated into multiple languages.

Surayya received numerous honours over the course of her career. Early recognition included the PEN Asian Poetry Prize in 1963. Later awards listed among her distinctions include the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Story, the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award (English) for Collected Poems, the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story, the Vayalar Award, the Asian Poetry Prize, the Ezhuthachan Award, and an honorary D.Litt. from the University of Calicut. She was also shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984.

Beyond writing, she served in literary and cultural roles such as vice-chairperson of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, chairperson of the Kerala Forestry Board, president of the Kerala Children’s Film Society, and as an editor and poetry editor for prominent publications.

Public profile

Surayya was known for direct, often controversial explorations of love, sexuality, identity and the female experience. Her openness in essays and autobiographical writing earned both admiration and criticism and led to comparisons with confessional poets of her era. She wrote in English and Malayalam and maintained a visible presence in India’s literary culture through columns and public roles.

Personal life

Kamala married Madhav Das, a bank officer, in 1949. The marriage produced three sons—M. D. Nalapat, Chinen Das and Jayasurya Das—and she is also recorded as having taken in a foster son, Irshad Gulam Ahmed. Her mother was the poet Nalapat Balamani Amma. She added the name Das after marriage and continued to write under multiple names in different languages throughout her life.

In 1999, at age 64, she announced her conversion to Islam and adopted the name Kamala Surayya. The change and her public comments about faith and practice received considerable attention.

Later years and death

Her final book, The Kept Woman and Other Stories, which included translations of her short fiction, was published after her death. Kamala Surayya died on 31 May 2009 in Pune; the cause of death is recorded as respiratory failure. She was 75 years old.
