Early life and background

Kamalpreet Kaur was born on 4 March 1996 in Kabarwala, Sri Muktsar Sahib district of Punjab. Tall from a young age, she attended Dasmesh Girls Senior Secondary School in Badal for her higher secondary education and later graduated from Punjabi University, Patiala. Her father, Kuldeep Singh, worked as a farmer and provided steady support when Kamalpreet decided to pursue sport; her mother was initially less enthusiastic about her leaving home to train.

Kamalpreet grew up playing a variety of sports and at one stage wanted to be a professional cricketer. A school athletics teacher steered her toward field events, and she began competing in shot put and discus. She trained at a Sports Authority of India centre and moved into hostel accommodation to pursue her athletic development more intensively.

Career

Kamalpreet made her mark in the national junior ranks, becoming U-18 and U-20 national champion in discus. Her international breakthrough came when she finished fifth at the World University Games in Taipei in 2017.

She went on to set successive national records in the discus. In 2019 she threw 65.06 m to set a national female record at the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in Patiala. She bettered that mark in 2021 with a throw of 66.59 m at the Indian Grand Prix-4 held at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.

Her performances earned her selection for the Tokyo Olympics, originally scheduled for 2020 and held in 2021. At the Games she reached the final and finished sixth with a best throw of 63.70 m.

Kamalpreet has also received institutional support at various stages of her career. In 2017 she secured a clerical position with Indian Railways, providing a regular salary that helped with training costs. From 2019 she received backing from the GoSports Foundation, which provided nutritional guidance and equipment assistance.
