Kamiya Jani Biography

Indian journalist-turned-entrepreneur who founded Curly Tales, a leading food and travel content platform. Former TV anchor who transitioned to digital, J1

Early life and background

Kamiya Jani was born on 25 May 1988 in Mumbai, where she also grew up. She completed higher education in the city, studying Mass Media and later earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Her family includes her parents, Mohan and Poonam Jani, an elder brother Tarun Jani and a sister Payal Jani. Her grandfather migrated to India from what became Pakistan after partition.

Career

Kamiya began her media career in journalism, joining The Times of India in February 2006. Within months she moved into broadcast news, working briefly with CNBC TV18 and then joining Bloomberg UTV in 2008 as an anchor and associate producer. There she focused on lifestyle, travel and entertainment programming. By 2010 she was anchoring financial markets for ET Now while also working as a travel anchor for MagicBricks Now.

After around a decade in traditional media, Kamiya left the routine of television broadcasting to build a new platform focused on local discovery, food and travel. In 2016 she launched the YouTube channel Curly Tales and went on to become the channel’s editor-in-chief. Under her leadership Curly Tales grew into a content company headquartered in Mumbai with a team of more than 20 people and became known for short-form stories and accessible travel and food recommendations aimed at a broad audience.

Curly Tales expanded beyond YouTube: the channel’s social footprint includes a sizeable Facebook following, and in 2019 a Curly Tales show aired on the television channel The Q India. Kamiya has covered a variety of events for her work, including motorsport coverage at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia, and she spoke at a TEDx event held at NIT Srinagar in October 2018.

Her work and influence in content and marketing have been recognised with industry awards: Top Social Influencer of the Year by Upper Story in 2018; The Most Influential Content Marketing Professional by the World Marketing Congress Awards in 2019; and The Best Food Influencer of the Year by Exhibit Magazine in 2022.

Public profile

Kamiya is known for a personal, exploratory approach to food and travel storytelling. Curly Tales built its audience by highlighting achievable, neighbourhood-level discoveries rather than exclusively luxury experiences, a strategy she has credited to social media’s wide reach. The Curly Tales YouTube channel has amassed over a million subscribers and the brand reports several million followers across platforms.

Outside of content creation, Kamiya has appeared on fashion runways, serving as a show-stopper at Bombay Times Fashion Week for the brand UNIMO (Universe of Moms) in April 2022. She has also participated in public conversations and interviews, including a widely reported interaction in January 2023 with a political figure during a public yatra in Rajasthan.

Personal life

Kamiya is married to Samar Verma. The couple first met when she was working as a finance writer at CNBC. Their relationship included periods of dating, separation and reconciliation before marriage. They have a daughter, Ziana Verma. Kamiya keeps a pet dog named Leo.

Physical profile and preferences

Kamiya’s listed height is approximately 168 cm (5 ft 6 in) with a weight around 55 kg. Her figure measurements, eye colour and hair colour are publicly noted, and she has shared favourite things such as pani puri, the book The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, and travel destinations including Goa, Lisbon, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Kerala. Her car collection has been reported to include a Mustang, a BMW 2 Series Coupe and a Tata Safari.

Latest updates

In December 2023, a visit to a temple in Puri drew significant online attention and criticism when a video from that visit circulated. Critics alleged she had promoted activities contrary to the temple’s rules; Kamiya responded on social media denying those accusations and explaining that showcasing cultural and culinary aspects is part of her professional vlogging.

As of the latest available information, Kamiya continues to lead Curly Tales and create travel and food content for digital audiences while participating in speaking engagements and public events.
