Kane Stuart Williamson was born on 8 August 1990 in Tauranga, New Zealand, and grew up in the Mount Maunganui area. He attended Tauranga Boys' College, where he combined strong academic performance with sporting achievement and served as head boy. From a young age he showed multi-sport promise: he played representative cricket as a teenager, scored prolific runs in school cricket, and earned a most valuable player award at a junior secondary schools basketball tournament.
