Raised in a family with agricultural roots, his father Jaishankar Singh worked as a farmer and his mother Meena Devi has worked as an Anganwadi employee. Kanhaiya grew up in Begusarai and attended local schools including Madhya Vidyalaya, Masnadpur and RKC High School in Barauni before moving on to higher studies in Patna and New Delhi.
Kumar completed a bachelor's degree in geography, followed by an MA in sociology and later earned a PhD in African Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The clip that circulated in news channels was later reported to have been doctored, and allegations were made that some of those involved were not JNU students. The episode prompted protests on campus and a range of responses from commentators, academics and public figures.

He also received both support and criticism from different quarters of public life as he transitioned from student activism to electoral politics.
Throughout his political career he has campaigned widely and attracted support from actors, writers and public intellectuals.
