Kanhaiyalal Biography
Character actor and writer Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi built a nearly five-decade film career from his roots in Varanasi. Best remembered for the role of Sukhil
Early life and backgroundKanhaiyalal Chaturvedi was born on 15 December 1910 in Banaras (now Varanasi), then part of the United Provinces in British India. He grew up in a family involved with stage performance: his father, Pandit Bhairodutt Choube, ran the Sanatan Dharm Ramleela Mandali in Varanasi. Formal schooling for Kanhaiyalal reached the fourth standard. From his teens he was drawn to theatre, writing and performing in plays and taking on small tasks in the company despite his father’s initial reluctance to support a career in the arts.
Career
Kanhaiyalal began working in theatre at a young age. By age 16 he was writing plays and taking minor parts on stage. After his father's death he and his elder brother attempted to keep the family drama company running but were forced to close it; they then ran a grocery store for a time. He later moved to Bombay to pursue work in films and theatre, staging some of his own written plays there.
His screen career began in the late 1930s. He first worked as an extra and contributed writing for film projects, and his first credited film role as an actor came in Jhul Badn (1938). Early work included a role in Sadhana (1938), where he also contributed songs and dialogue, and a villainous part in Ek Hi Raasta (1939). He also assisted on film projects behind the camera, rewriting dialogue and lyrics on at least one production.
Kanhaiyalal rose to prominence with the role of Sukhilala, a moneylender, in the 1940 film Aurat directed by Mehboob Khan. The part established him as a memorable character actor. He sustained an on-set injury while filming a sequence for Aurat but completed the work despite the accident. His portrayal of Sukhilala was later reprised in Mehboob Khan’s remake Mother India (1957), making him one of the few actors to replay the same role many years after the original.
Across a career that spanned roughly 45 years, Kanhaiyalal appeared in more than 150 films. Notable titles include Bhookh (1946), Bahen (1941) — in which a small initial allocation of scenes was expanded because of the strength of his performance — Devdas (1955), Upkar (1967), Gaon Hamara Shaher Tumhara (1972), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), and Haathkadi (1981), his last film.
Public profile
Kanhaiyalal was known for playing characters older than his actual age early in his career; he repeatedly described that pattern in interviews, noting that he began portraying elderly roles when he was still young. In addition to acting and writing, he had a strong interest in music. He was a habitual paan eater and typically carried a paan box with him.
Family and personal life
Kanhaiyalal was married and fathered seven children — three sons and four daughters. One of his daughters, Hemaa Singh, is a filmmaker. He had a brother, Sankata Prasad Chaturvedi, who was also an actor, and a sister named Kunwar. Kanhaiyalal’s first wife’s name is not recorded in the excerpt; his second wife was Jambansi Chaturvedi.
Death and legacy
Kanhaiyalal died on 14 August 1982 at the age of 72. His daughter Hemaa Singh later directed a documentary about his life, titled Naam Tha Kanhaiyalal (also presented as Cradle to Grave in festival screenings), which was released on MX Player and shown at film festivals. Hemaa has publicly argued that his long contribution to Indian cinema merits higher recognition.
