Kanika Kapoor was born on 21 August 1978 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, into a family with a strong musical and business background. Her father, Rajeev Kapoor, runs the family electrical trading business, while her mother, Poonam Kapoor, is involved in Chikan embroidery and runs a boutique. Kanika grew up in an extended family in Lucknow and began formal musical training early; by age 11 she had performed on All India Radio. She studied at Loreto Convent in Lucknow and later completed both a BA and an MA in music from the Bhatkhande Music Institute.
