Muthuvel Karunanidhi Kanimozhi was born on 5 January 1968 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. She is the daughter of the late M. Karunanidhi and Rajathi Ammal and grew up within a prominent political family in the state. Kanimozhi attended Presentation Convent, Church Park in Chennai and went on to study at Ethiraj College for Women, University of Madras, where she completed a Master’s degree in Economics in 1994.

Kanimozhi began her professional life in journalism, working across several Tamil and Tamil-language publications. Her early roles included positions at Kungumam, The Hindu and Tamil Murasu, where she served in editorial capacities. She later moved into public life and politics with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Her parliamentary career started in 2007 when she became a Member of the Rajya Sabha representing Tamil Nadu; she was returned to the Rajya Sabha again in July 2013. In the 2019 general election she contested the Thoothukudi Lok Sabha seat and won, defeating the BJP candidate and state unit president by a significant margin.
