Karan Gautam Adani was born on 7 April 1987 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He grew up in a Gujarati family and follows Jainism. After completing his schooling, he studied economics at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and graduated with a degree in economics.

Career

After finishing his studies, Karan joined the family business, Adani Ports & SEZ Limited (APSEZ), where he began by learning the operational aspects of port management. In the early years of his tenure he spent time at Mundra Port in Kutch to understand on-the-ground operations and the diverse activities handled there.

Karan moved through management ranks and by 2014 was representing the company at industry events and receiving recognition on its behalf. In 2016 he was promoted to Chief Executive Officer of Adani Ports & SEZ Limited. In 2019 the Adani Group entered a 50-year public-private partnership with the Airports Authority of India to operate and develop six non-metro airports across the country. The airports included Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Jaipur International Airport, Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, Mangalore International Airport, and Trivandrum International Airport. These projects were assigned to Karan for execution.

Karan also participated in strategic deals across the group. He was involved in the acquisitions of Ambuja Cements and ACC by the Adani Group. On 16 September 2022 he was appointed Chairman of ACC Limited and named a non-executive director of Ambuja Cements.
