Karan Bajaj Biography

Karan Bajaj is an Indian-born entrepreneur, author, yoga teacher and businessman known for bestselling novels, a corporate marketing career in the US and a

Early life and background
Karan Bajaj was born on 30 June 1979 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The son of an Indian Army officer, he moved frequently as a child and spent large parts of his early years in hill towns, including Shimla and areas of the Himalayas. Growing up in those environments fostered a lifelong interest in hiking and backpacking.

Bajaj completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, and went on to earn an MBA in Marketing from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He attended Army Public School, Delhi during his schooling years.

Career
Bajaj began his professional career in brand management, joining Procter & Gamble in 2002 as an assistant brand manager. His work at P&G included responsibility for brands such as Ariel in India and Herbal Essences in the United States. His marketing achievements were recognised in 2007 when Ad Age named him among the ‘Top 40 under 40’ marketers in the U.S., a distinction noted as unique among Indian-born marketers at that time.

While still working at P&G, Bajaj wrote his first novel, Keep Off The Grass, which was published in 2008. The book sold tens of thousands of copies within its first year and brought him attention as a novelist. Encouraged by that success, he took an extended sabbatical from corporate life to travel through South America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, gathering experiences that would inform his writing.

After his travels Bajaj joined the Boston Consulting Group, working in consumer and strategy where his clients included global names such as Starbucks and Walmart. During his time at BCG he completed his second novel, Johnny Gone Down, which was released in 2010.

Personal loss and a shift toward spiritual practice influenced the next phase of his life. Following his mother’s illness and passing, Bajaj explored themes of meaning and spirituality more deeply. In 2012 he and his wife spent a year traveling overland from Scotland to India and spent several months living in an ashram, practising yoga and meditation under austere conditions.

Subsequently he returned to the United States to work as a marketing director at Kraft Foods for about three years while writing his third novel, The Seeker. Published in 2015 by Penguin Random House, The Seeker follows a protagonist who leaves a conventional career to pursue answers about human suffering and ultimately becomes a yogi in the Himalayas.

In 2016 Bajaj took the role of head of South Asia for Discovery Networks International, a position he held until 2018. By then he had amassed over seventeen years of experience across brand management and digital strategy.

Entrepreneurship and WhiteHat Jr.
In 2019 Bajaj founded WhiteHat Jr., an online learning platform aimed at teaching computer programming to children between six and fourteen years old. The company experienced rapid growth under his leadership; he later sold WhiteHat Jr. to Byju’s for $300 million. Bajaj said the decision to sell was driven by a desire to scale the product to a much larger audience more quickly than he could have done alone.

Public profile
Beyond books and business, Bajaj is a certified yoga and meditation teacher. He shares insights on personal growth, spirituality and entrepreneurship through a personal blog and a YouTube channel. His public activities include teaching and producing content related to yoga, meditation and mindful living.

Latest updates
After the sale of WhiteHat Jr., Bajaj continued to engage in public-facing projects, writing and teaching. He maintains an online presence through his website and YouTube channel where he publishes content on a range of topics from entrepreneurship to meditation.

Personal life
Karan Bajaj is married to Kerry Bajaj, who is described as a child sleep expert. The couple have two daughters, Leela and Rumi. Bajaj holds American nationality and is listed at approximately 1.93 m (6 ft 4 in) tall with black hair and black eyes.
