Early life and background

Karan Brar was born on January 18, 1999, in Redmond, Washington, and grew up in the Seattle-area community of Bothell. He is American by nationality and was raised by his parents, Harinder and Jasbinder Brar. He has an older sister, Sabreena Sandhu. Brar completed his schooling at Cedar Wood Elementary and Oak Park High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree.

As a child he began working in commercials at around eight years old, appearing in spots such as those for Shell. While pursuing higher education he continued to study acting through workshops with John Robert Powers and Patti Kalle.

Career

Brar’s professional screen debut came in the 2010 American film Diary of a Wimpy Kid, in which he played the role of Chirag Gupta. He returned to the role for subsequent entries in the franchise. To prepare for Chirag, he worked with a dialect coach to shape the character’s voice and cultural mannerisms.

Television work brought Brar wider recognition when he joined the Disney Channel sitcom Jessie in 2011 as Ravi Ross, an adopted Indian boy navigating life in a wealthy American household while holding on to his cultural roots. The part became a defining early role and led to Brar continuing the character in the spinoff series Bunk’d beginning in 2015.

Beyond his Disney roles, Brar has worked across film, television and voice acting. His credits include the holiday film Chilly Christmas (2012), voice work on the animated Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014), and a stunt-trained part as Suresh in the science-fiction feature Pacific Rim Uprising (2018). He has appeared in films such as Stargirl (2018), The Fuck-It List (2020), The Argument (2020), and Hubie Halloween (2020). In 2023 he provided the voice of Jay in the animated Warner Bros. film Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham.

On television, Brar’s work extends beyond Jessie and Bunk’d to appearances on series including Pair of Kings, Teens Wanna Know, Pass the Plate, Lab Rats, Chasing LA, The Night Shift, Youth & Consequences, Champions, Schooled, and Epic Night. He has also performed voice work for children’s programming, including the role of Prince Zandar on Sofia the First.

Public profile

Brar has received recognition for his ensemble and supporting performances from youth-oriented industry awards. His honours include Young Artist Awards for ensemble and supporting roles connected to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Jessie, and a Young Entertainer Award for his work on Bunk’d. He was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award for his performance on Jessie.

Outside of acting, Brar has used his platform to promote charitable causes. He supports the Cameron Boyce Foundation, an organization established in memory of his late friend Cameron Boyce that focuses on epilepsy research, education and awareness. Brar has also acted as an ambassador for the Thirst Project, which works to expand access to safe drinking water in underserved communities.

Personal notes

Brar’s physical stats listed in public profiles include a height of approximately 1.73 m (5 ft 8 in), brown eyes and black hair. He follows a non-vegetarian diet, enjoys travelling, hiking and reading, and has mentioned that he makes guacamole. He adopted a cat named Max in 2020. Brar has a tattoo—a Polaroid image—on his left arm in tribute to Cameron Boyce.

He has spoken publicly about experiences as an Indian American actor in Hollywood, addressing the limited number of roles and stereotyping and expressing a desire to play a broader range of characters.
