Early life and backgroundKarimul Haque was born on 7 June 1968 in Rajadanga, Malbazar, West Bengal. He attended Rajadanga Penda Mahammad High School but left formal education early and is described as a school dropout. He grew up in a working-class family; his father, the late Lalua Mohammad, worked as a daily-wage labourer. Karimul is married to Anjuya Begum and they have four children: two sons, Raju and Ahachanul (who runs a betel leaf shop and a cellphone repair shop), and two daughters who are married.
Career
Karimul has spent much of his life working in the tea gardens around Malbazar. A turning point came after two separate emergencies: his mother suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in 1995 and, some years later, a colleague collapsed while working in the fields. Faced with limited transport options for urgent medical care, Karimul improvised by transporting the injured worker on his motorcycle. That experience led him to start a motorcycle ambulance service in 1998 after purchasing a bike on loan.
Since then, Karimul has run a makeshift ambulance that serves the sparse network of villages around his hometown. He has assisted people in more than 20 neighbouring villages and, as of 2020, had helped over 5,500 people in medical emergencies. He provides first aid with support from local doctors when possible, and he reinvests most of his own modest earnings into the service. Karimul continued to work in the tea garden, earning about Rs. 5,000 a month, and used much of that income to keep the bike ambulance operating.
Recognition and upgrades
Karimul’s work attracted local and national attention over the years. He received the Ananya Samaan award from the Zee Group’s 24 Ghanta news channel in 2012. In 2017 he was awarded the Padma Shri for his service to villagers in and around Dhalabari. In 2018 Bajaj Auto Limited upgraded his motorcycle ambulance with practical additions such as a waterproof stretcher and oxygen cylinder ports to make it more useful during transfers.
Public profile
Karimul’s story has been shared widely. He appeared as a guest speaker at a TEDx event in 2018, and that same year he was invited to Rashtrapati Bhavan on the eve of Republic Day, where he met the Prime Minister. A biography titled Bike-Ambulance Dada, written by journalist-turned-social-entrepreneur Bswajit Jha, was published in 2019. Reports also noted plans for a Hindi film based on his life. In 2021 he featured on the special Karamveer episode of the television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 12.
Philanthropy and outlook
Beyond urgent medical transports, Karimul has helped his community in other ways, including donating funds and clothing to those in need during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. He has expressed a clear personal ambition: to obtain a fully equipped ambulance fitted with advanced healthcare facilities to better serve people living in remote areas.
Latest updates
By 2020 Karimul’s motorcycle ambulance had a track record of thousands of emergency transports and had received technical improvements from a major manufacturer. His public appearances and the publication of his biography have increased awareness of the challenges rural communities face when accessing emergency medical care. He continues to split his time between tea-garden work and running the bike ambulance for his neighbours.
