Early life and backgroundKarma Takapa was born in Borong, Sikkim in 1986. He grew up in the northeastern region of India and attended several schools in the area, including Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok, St. Augustine's School in Kalimpong and Mount Hermon School in Darjeeling. He completed undergraduate studies in Delhi before pursuing a postgraduate qualification in print journalism at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Delhi. He later trained in direction and screenplay writing at the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, graduating in 2009.
Career
Takapa's working life has included journalism and filmmaking. Before joining FTII he worked at The Indian Express. He made his on-screen acting debut in the 2012 Hindi film I.D., in which he appeared as a character named Karma. In the same year he began directing and writing short films, including a short he directed titled 11 Minutes and a Tibetan-language short he wrote called Thutse Kyuma.
In 2015 he moved into feature filmmaking as a writer and co-director of the Chhattisgarhi feature Mor Mann Ke Bharam, which premiered at the 17th Mumbai Film Festival and earned a Special Jury Prize for direction at that edition of the festival. Two years later he wrote and directed the Nepali-language drama-mystery Ralang Road, which premiered at the 52nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was screened at multiple international film festivals.
As an actor he has worked in both films and streaming series. He gained wider attention for playing Dev, a shaman able to communicate with the dead, in the 2021 Amazon Prime Video supernatural crime thriller series The Last Hour. In 2023 he appeared in the Netflix film Jaane Jaan in the role of Sundar, sharing the screen with Kareena Kapoor Khan.
